This chapter gave a great overview of how a teacher can use writing across the curriculum.  It gave many good examples of teachers in social studies, science, math and other subject areas using writing as an assessment tool, inhancing student thinking skills, and assessing their writng abilities by using journals, books or maybe poetry.  This is a little different than writing summaries, K-W-L charts, or the boring reports.  Writing does promote learning in all areas and I feel is a vital strategy in teaching our students and preparing them for college and the "real world".  We write everyday, and students must have the confidence they need in writing to succeed.

This chapter was informational. I agree with the passage that,  "Writing to learn purportedly helps students use language to make meaning of new information in light of what they already know about the topic, thus acquiring a personal ownership of ideas."  I also like the statement, "Children do not learn to write by working exclusively on exercises in grammar texts; they primarily learn to write by writing."
I feel that the earlier we start having our students write, the better writers they become. We start in Kindergarten right away from simple labeling tree parts to writing/copying words and sentences in daily journals. By Christmas on, our students start putting real meaning in their writing and start to develop confidence in creating their own writing.
